Miroir Noir - Individuality and trinity

MIROIR NOIR : INDIVIDUALITY AND TRINITY — MRB                 (eng) (svk dole)

Ivana Moncoľová

MRB is a new series of paintings on canvas which capture the changing landscape as time passes. The inspiration for the artistic duo Miloš Kopták & Rai Escalé (Miroir Noir) lies in the drawings by the late Slovak modernist Miloš Alexander Bazovský (1899 – 1968). They were freely inspired by Bazovský’s drawings which reflected the gradually changing appearance of the landscape in the 1930s and the post-war land of 20th century Slovakia with its electrification and deforestation. MRB is the abbreviation used for the three artists M (Miloš), R (Rai), B (Bazovský) and is a reference to Bazovský’s signature, which he often gave as the abbreviation of his whole name, M.A.B. (Miloš Alexander Bazovský).

In its work to date, Miroir Noir has mainly dealt with the contemporary portrait, the criticism of the social image of rulers, dictators and their (im)mortality. They began creating landscapes expressive of mood and close to abstraction in 2015 and 2016, when they decided to paint outside the studio, in the countryside around the town of Bellavista in Catalonia. The influence of the neoExpressionist painting tradition can be found in their works, as well as Baroque darkness with the themes of futility, death, temporality and life. The great names in the history of Spanish painting are their inspiration.

In the current series exhibited in the Miloš A. Bazovský Gallery in Trenčín, they present new works created between 2017 and 2018. The latter are freely inspired by drawings of the Slovak painter Miloš A. Bazovský which can be found in the collections of Slovak museums and are not often presented in the context of Bazovský’s work.

The principal theme of the MRB series, inspired by the drawings of painter Miloš Alexander Bazovský, is the landscape. While the source of inspiration is mainly Bazovský’s monochrome drawings, the result is painting on canvas by Miloš Kopták and Rai Escalé. However, the motivation behind their creation is not primarily to quote, but rather to initiate further work. The con-templation of Bazovský’s work is respectful, an attempt to complete the initiating drawing as a painting and give it a contemporary touch, whilst fully respecting Bazovský; to repeat the prism of a landscape changing through industrialisation, globalisation, that is the moment which was present at Bazovský’s time as well as at the time of Miroir Noir’s (Miloš Kopták and Rai Escalé) work.

Miroir Noir expresses a relationship to the landscape and to the process of painting itself. They paint what they are and the painting is part of their self-discovery, not only from the aspect of the cooperation between two artists, but also from the aspect of the application of paint, working with speed and in time, deciding, experimenting with the opportunities given by dark colouring, a fascination with the technique of painting to which the landscape theme is exceptionally suited and more relaxed. Bazovský’s original study drawings, stripped of his traditional dark, earthy colours, reduced to a quick outline, a sketch which was not made into a painting, was a sufficiently strong impulse for the Miroir Noir couple to capitalise on the gesture of painting. The precision of the line, with the opportunity to reflect on their own paintings, independently of Bazovský’s original work and colour, enabled them to use their own approaches to dark aesthetics, the painting technique, and the landscape’s thematic shift towards the present day.

Miroir Noir look at landscape painting as did the French painter Gustave Courbet in the nineteenth century, when he gained for it recognition as a genre of equal value and a separate branch of painting (until his work and the presentation of his works as landscapes, it had held a low value in society). By gaining an equal status for the landscape genre, its painting was confirmed and accepted as an artist’s technical discovery and experimentation, work with pastose pigments, urgent work with the surface texture which help construct an image with a feeling for expression, spontaneity and drama, the negligence of the stroke as a strategy for the image’s overall impression and a post-punk aesthetic tendency. In this sense, the landscape is perceived as the artistic work of painters, as a credible and authentic image of the person/ artist.

REINTERPRETATION IN THE WORK OF MIROIR NOIR

To the artistic duo Miroir Noir, the interpretation of a work of art or a visual work has been from the beginning close to the reinterpretation of a photographic record with a historical or political connotation, through the reinterpretation of a work from the history of art to the repainting of ad- vertising posters. However, they never devoted themselves to this so intensely and in such a concen- trated form as in the MRB cycle. The approach to the reinterpretation of the work or photograph, as a moment in art or history important for the wider public, had until now more of an ironic view and the artists’ attitude to a historical or artistic moment known to the public. They placed their own view into it, attracting the viewer’s attention.

In the case of the interpretations of Miloš Alexander Bazovský’s work, it is an intuitive and essentially discussed analysis of the work, of the rapid stroke of Bazovský’s hand, decomposing the meaning of the construction, the perspective or the suppressed perspective etc. The second moment is the completion of the painting construction, which also encodes reality for the viewer; the ability to discern horizontal lines indirectly offers the latter an interpretation of the landscape. In the case of the background details which “ornamented” Bazovský’s paper, such as the indication of a line of trees, a row of trees, walking figures, telephone posts, these remain only partially in Miroir Noir’s paintings, others have disintegrated. The cultural symbols of the past have been replaced by symbols of the global present: the sun on the horizon is replaced by the logo of a chain store, the cross in the landscape is replaced by the logo of the car manufacturer Mercedes Benz. Bazovský’s initiatory drawings have been through both a morphing of ideas and visual morphing. Once more, they offer the views the meaning not only of the globalisation of the landscape, but also of the change in the values system over the course of the last eight decades. As Miroir Noir say: “the landscape is ruled by new totems”.

The new MRB series fulfils a spectrum of intentions, including a certain modernistic do- cumentarism of the change in the environment and the values which have been attributed to the landscape as a premise for artistic research, as well as social or environmental study. Metaphorically speaking, a comparison with memory as a record of changes is also attributed to it. The idea of Miroir Noir was to create a series of new pieces of work with a distinguishable artistic thought and its own artistic coding.

In the optics of the Miroir Noir artistic duo, reinterpretation takes the form of a modern aesthetic solution. It achieves (as already described by U. Eco) a dialectic relationship between order and novelty, scheme and innovation. The intertextual shift between Bazovský’s work and the work of Miroir Noir is evident from its encoding of global reality, much discussed in society, yet accepted in artistic terms for its critical perception and concordant documentation of reality (Miroir Noir’s paintings have titles such as LIDL, Mercedes Benz).

DRAWING AS A PRIMAL MEDIUM

In the past, the Miroir Noir artists found their inspiration in documentary, historical and advertis- ing photography. Drawings as inspiration are new to their work. M. A. Bazovský used as his medium of recording photography, drawing as well as open-air painting. Drawing per se, and its essence for Bazovský, is to capture the most fundamental features with a minimum of lines, a reduction in the construction of space and also a clear picture scheme which presents the space. Miroir Noir perceive Bazovský’s drawing as “an initial record of a though, a pictorial poem in simplicity, stripped of all that stands in the way”, which is redundant for expressing the motif, the pictorial relationships.

Out of the numerous drawings, the China ink sketches attracted their opinion, in which Bazovský left his own typical horizontal line. The picture is a never-ending landscape, slashed by several strokes of lines. Yet the picture is not created by the original pale yellow surface of paper, but by just those few strokes of ink.

Beforehand, Miroir Noir had worked strikingly with the dark aesthetics of the picture, where darkness formed a spiritual space for the nature of the figure or face. A certain unknown magic of the interspace between the material-bodily and the unknown spiritual, a precedence in interpretation shaped by the Jewish apocalypse and medieval Christian mysticism. The work and detailed knowledge of Bazovský’s drawings changed the usual darkness into light colouring. As Miroir Noir say, “we went in the direction of white sfumato, the figure is composed of light and the theme is decomposed by light.”

The decomposition of the original theme in Bazovský, capturing a group of trees, transformed through Miroir Noir’s optics into a theme of rotating abstract figures against a pale background, entitled “Rye Goddesses”, is a reference to the black magic, to the mysticism of so-called goddesses – healers who were present around Hrozenkov, Žítkovo, Dolina-Drietoma, Púchovská dolina. This is the area close to present-day Trenčín, which was well-known for its hamlets of healers who used white magic and were still helping ordinary people in the second half of the twentieth century. The mystical element confirmed by its pale colour changes the usual scheme of mysticism in art as something dark and sombre.

The way in which Bazovský’s work is looked upon, well-documented and well-known, particular in the context of Slovakia, appears as a certain quiet admiration, acceptance. In the context of world art (partially in the Czech Republic), the work of M. A. Bazovský is not known. Despite this fact, it is gratifying to note that Rai Escalé, the Catalan artist, has identified with the idea of reflecting the artistic message of Bazovský’s work. And that his work, this very first idea captured in his drawing, can be grasped in a free hand even by an artist from a different artistic and historical environment and tradition.

MIROIR NOIR : INDIVIDUALITA  A TROJJEDINOST — MRB_                         (svk)

Presnosť línie s možnosťou uvažovať o vlastnom maliarskom diele nezávisle od pôvodnej Bazovského tvorby a farebnosti a dovolila im použiť vlastné prístupy temnej estetiky, maliarskej techniky, tematického posunu krajiny smerom k súčasnosti.

Ideou Miroir Noir bolo vytvorenie série nových diel s rozoznateľnou vlastnou autorskou myšlienkou a vlastným autorským kódovaním.

Reinterpretácia v optike autorskej dvojice Miroir Noir má podobu moderného estetického riešenia. Dosahuje (už U. Ecom opísaný) dialektický vzťah medzi poriadkom a novosťou, medzi schémou a inováciou.

Istá nepoznaná mágia medzipriestoru medzi materiálnym – telesným a nepoznaným duchovným, interpretačný precedens vytvorený židovskou apokalyptikou a stredovekou kresťanskou mystikou. Práca a detailné poznanie Bazovského kresieb zmenilo zaužívanú temnú smerom k svetlej farebnosti.

Miroir Noir Nocturne by Petr Vaňous (ENG/CZ)

Nocturne(ENG) (CZ below)

I owe the discovery of Uqbar to the conjunction of a mirror and an encyclopaedia.

(Jorge Luis Borges in Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius)

A mysterious emblem greets the viewer when entering the Pelhřimov exhibition: a black mirror in period frame, with the inscription “Miroir Noir”. It refers back to the year 2007, when two artists living at opposite ends of Europe, the Catalonian Rai Escalé and the Slovak Miloš Kopták, established an artistic duo of that name. The birth of this “artistic identity” was spontaneous and it endures to this day. There were, to be sure, existential preconditions. The name is a metaphor of what links these two artists. A mirror, turned in any particular direction, retrieves and reproduces what appears in front of it. This fact by itself is mysterious and evokes disquiet. The black mirror, however, is an expression of something much more disturbing and subversive, because darkness can mirror only itself as a certain given quality. And so the black mirror is a metaphor of contradiction (negation), a logical toy, but one which can awaken live imagination and creative art.

These two artists from different cultural settings resolved to appear in public, under that flag of stimulating contradiction, as a single being, a kind of “third person” who would fuse Catalonian openness, directness and spontaneity with a critical, allegorical and impulsive Slovak spirit. Together they create pictures. Either physically in the same place, or long-distance, producing “correspondence works” which make pigrimage from Slovakia to Spain and back again. Two expressive canons come to experience each other; two elemental forces mutually adapt, thrash things out and negate, until they attain a certain level of reconciliation and calm, which is the resulting painting (series). The painting unifies the contradictoriness of two worlds which could never be entirely concordant, because among all the existing things on earth no two beings are the same. Here there is a closeness which is sometimes self-sustaining and elsewhere thoroughly and ruthlessly turns against itself, in a melancholic and occasionally self-destructive passion. Nonetheless the multi-layered transformation, fixing time as a form of the creative painterly process, leads to results which turn obscurity and darkness into something else. A kind of new light, or Cortazar lighting rather, a positive value, which, automatically reducing the significance of darkness to something unambiguously negative, once again decomposes to a spectral and symbolic diversity and multiplicity wherein new sources of renewal, new possibilities, horizons of possible geneses, are concealed. What is dark need not necessarily be destructive; conversely, what is beautiful need not be false or ambivalent. Creative physical experience of forms cannot lie, however, because by its very nature it is the totalisation, the fulfilment process, out of which the painting is born. An impersonal approach to painting, or conversely, an emphatically personal approach, exemplified in the amalgam and dialectic of two artistic procedures, finds its expressive premise in collage, specifically in the associative principle. The right hand responds to the left, one being responds to a second; the canvas is a frontier that is gambled for, which gradually acquires density and outline. An event springs up from an amorphous plainland; it is linked either to a specific theme that it develops or to some objective impulses which it retrieves on the level of situation and setting.

Nocturne tells us about hidden things, just as it tells about lights in natural settings. About the quiet Spanish village to which Miroir Noir (he) withdrew from the noise, opacity and speed of civilisation, so as to renew his natural perceptiveness towards quietened-down things and situations: the motifs of olive trees growing there for centuries, their eccentric forms suited to enabling survival in climatically arduous natural conditions. These are pictures which refer to two levels of painting, as I read them: they seek to retrieve the atmosphere that comes from the relationship between the creative artist and his life setting, and they also seek symbolic expression of the artists’ awareness of how transient is the time that bounds human existence. This is projected, as it were, into deformation of the vegetation; likewise, in Miroir Noir’s previous work there was deformation of faces and of human and animal figures. Just as Jorge Luis Borges met with Bioy Casares in that story of his, and when quite by accident they came upon a mirror, in conversation they realised that “there’s something monstrous about the mirror” and through this shared experience they went on to discover a fictional land named Uqbar: so also two European painters, encountering each other, went on together to discover and retrieve a frontier of the image, a horizon, which is not formatted purely by one consciousness and one subconscious and does not lay down one single valid truth, but rather from its inception branches into a more complex supra-individual formation, opening up an abundance of new questions for painting.

Nokturna (CZ)

Kobjevení Uqbaru mi dopomohla konjukce zrcadla a encyklopedie.

The story of Miroir Noir by Ivana Moncolova (ENG)

Miroir Noir, the Black Mirror, is a couple of artists: Slovak Miloš Kopták and Catalan Rai Escalé. The middle-aged artists have pursued their careers in their home countries. Miloš Kopták is a book illustrator and gallery owner. Rai Escalé is a painter and artist known on the Catalan art scene. However, the Spaniard Escalé saw the works by Miloš Kopták in 2007 and decided to ask him for cooperation. And since then they have collaborated in painting. Their cooperation did not begin at the academy or within the Erasmus programme and similar projects. At that time they were middle-aged and were pursuing their artistic careers.

They called their cooperation Miroir Noir – Black Mirror – as a reference to the legend of the black mirror: 17th century painters looked into the mirror when they wanted to relax after exhausting work on paintings. It is also an explanatory reference to their common aesthetic. It goes back to the roots of the great painters, Goya, Murillo, Velázquez, and acts as a dialogue with great painters of the past through the medium of expressive “black paintings”. The aesthetic of dark emotional undertones in painting and art in general has a long tradition in Spain and is associated with great figures that refined it. On the Central European art scene it refers to the works by Franz Kafka and Josef Váchal.

The first works by the Miroir Noir were appropriations and re-paintings of posters and billboards resulting in weird portraits of anonymous people.
They first exhibited their works in Spain in the Iguapop and Eat Meat Galleries in Barcelona, focusing on dark, post-Punk aesthetic relevant to the production of the Miroir Noir . Their exhibition in the Blokker Gallery in Madrid in 2013 was highlighted in the daily El País that brought a two-page article entitled “Baroque Punk for Art and Four Hands”.It attracted viewers and collectors from around the world (the daily is available in all Spanish-speaking countries). The realistic subjects of their works draw on current social issues and they also present their own themes.

They draw inspiration from the photographs purchased at flea markets across Europe, or explore their family archives of several successive generations. The realistic scene is painted on canvas and subsequently destroyed, as they say, “negated” to achieve free expression.
The subject of brides and wedding portraits is based on their own experience and family traumas caused by marriage, depicting blurred and unclear staged studio double portraits. This important moment in human life captures the happiness of the bride and groom in staged photographs. The paintings are similar to the series of portraits of twin sisters at the ceremony of consecration, or first Communion.

The Miroir Noir prefers to explore the subjects of repeated ceremony and staged personal purity as a certain public social act. They admit that they have participated in these family commitments and revive their memories as observers in clean starched clothing, not quite agreeing with their roles.
The whole series includes cycles of brides called Propter Nuptias and wedding bouquets. Actually, the brides are not happy because they are dead brides. Their portraits were painted after the portraits of prostitutes and pornographic actors.
The third group of exhibited paintings, somewhat unrelated to intellectually refined brides and double portraits of newlyweds, is a series of dogs. After a rather confrontational theme of brides, it gives the paintings an air of calm. The series of dogs Canis Lunae displays excellent, unrestrained expressive painting. In relation to subject matter it expresses a completely different subject: a loyal relationship between man and dog often made superior to the relationship between people. All the subjects explored by the Miroir Noir seem to share a common criticism of objects, phenomena and the personality cult, rhetorically called an institution “By the Grace of God” that acts as adoration consecrated by public opinion (marriage, children’s/female purity/impurity within the church institution or General Franco, publicly labelled the leader of Spain by the Grace of God).

An important concept of their collaboration is the preparation and reflection on the subjects. Rai Escalé lives in Barcelona, Miloš Kopták in Bratislava and they meet alternately in the two cities for painting sessions. They discuss the subjects online.
Both artists brought to the fore the subject of marriage and its recognition from the male perspective. Yet they came up with the criticism of political ideas from their own individual perspective. Escalé remembers people opening the bottles of champagne when dictator Franco died. Kopták brought to attention the political case labelled Gorilla.

Their portraits are therefore full of criticism. They are similarly concerned with the portraits of contemporary Spanish families, as was Velázquez, but their points of view and painting reveal animosity. The members of the Spanish royal family are known for scandalous revelations, including an embarrassing elephant hunt of King Juan Carlos in Africa sponsored by an Arab businessman. Their paintings make a mockery of official morality and the rhetoric presented to the media. I have long thought that one of the artists is only a fictitious person, because painting by four hands seemed unreal to me. The question arises as to how painters can be a creative couple. The process of painting is an experience, but also a space for their ideological clashes. Actually, each of them is forced to deflate his ego to achieve a compromise solution in the process of cooperation. They consider their cooperation in painting as a form of communication, achievable only up to a certain boundary that has its limitations.

They admit that they often hate each other when painting, but their best works are probably results of their arguments. They work on two paintings at the same time. In the process of painting their work is reviewed, corrected and criticised. If one of them notices that the other one is not doing well, they often exchange their works. If they do not make progress at all, they postpone its completion until the next meeting.

Miroir Noir Parallel Universes by Jiří Olič (EN // CZ)

The pictorial world of the Miroir Noir group is strange and magical, and these two painters creating “parallel worlds” may be found to have quite a few other typical qualities also. What they create would not exist if they didn’t have something in common, and above all the need to work together as a pair.

Choice of themes is important for the Miroir Noir artist-painters: that is to say, themes distinctive of our present time and particularly those of its manifestations and shapes which we take for granted and do not even notice. Also characteristic is the choice of everyday, common themes along with others which are morbid or exclusive.

Though expressive in their presentation, and quite significantly so, these works do not proclaim any new expressionism. In their own way they are a kind of grotesques, and what marks them out is precisely that black mirror set in place: the portrayal of objects and people in a somewhat un- natural, fantastic form. To be sure, every art – and visual art can be no exception – reflects its time-period, the unique time that it mirrors and ultimately fixes in a definitive image. Art historians love to classify and arrange, that being their job and their pleasure, but the Miroir Noir presents quite a difficult case, because in the age that we call postmodern the neo-expressionists and the post-expressionists are long since out of date. Perhaps we will not stray too far from the theme if we say that the Miroir Noir artists see with grotesque vision as they create their images, and in this context I find that the name and work of Goya occurs to me insistently – I am not quite sure why, but perhaps because his work was not received with enthusiasm and was labelled as coarse and barbaric in his own day. Something of this filiation and grotesque vision can be seen in preceding cycles representing a kind of memento mori, with the bodies of dictators and generals in coffins seeming to say: vanities of life, where death is victorious! The paradox of all the grotesque consists in the fact that while it is ridiculous it is also to some degree appalling.

Black mirrors by their very name are somewhat morbid, evoking grave moods while at the same time not excluding humour: every mirror that is black must also and in its own way be grotesque. Black is the basic colour in all of the images, as if everything previously had been gathered into black.

The group of works exhibited in Bratislava’s Pálffy Palace came into being gradually, through selection from cycles currently in progress: “Wedding Bouquets”, “Bride”, “Consecration” and “Moon Dog”.

The Miroir Noir group originated in 2007. The two painters who founded it were Rai Escalé from Spain and Miloš Kopták from Slovakia. While the formation of groups is a fairly com- mon event, what was unusual in this instance was that each member did his painting associatively: they alternated in the work but also worked simultaneously on one painting and in the form of a painters’ dialogue. Undoubtedly their similar painter’s vision was a crucial element for working in common, but that painterly dialogue also did not exclude the divergences that are given facts of “another” way of seeing, nor the contrasts in personality and temperament of the two painters: that is to say, each of them stands on “somewhat different” foundations. Nor did the dialogue referred to above exclude conflicts (or if so, then only the ephemeral and banal). Assuredly there were conflicts, especially when interventions in a particular work proved to be vain rather than vital.

The title “Parallel Worlds” nonetheless illuminates the basis for work in common and certainly also friendship, which is a precious thing and at the same time a guarantee of further significant work.

Každé umění zajisté (a výtvarné není výjimkou) je odrazem své doby, tu jedinou totiž zrcadlí a posléze ustálí do definitivního obrazu. Kunsthistorikové z profese i záliby rádi klasifikují a řadí, v případě malířů skupiny Miror Noir ovšem dost obtížně neboť v době, kterou nazýváme postmoderní jsou časy neoexpresionistů i postexpresionistů dávno pryč.

Soubor děl vystavených v bratislavském Pálffyho paláci vznikal postupně, výběrem z cyklů současných- „Svatobné kytice“, „Nevesta“, „Vysviacka“ a „Mesačný pes“.

Skupina Miror Noir vznikla v roce 2007, založili ji dva malíři: Španěl Rai Escalé a Slovák Miloš Kopták.

Miroir Noir by Anna Adell (ESP)

Miroir Noir Propter Nuptias by Jiří Olič (ENG)

M I R O I R   N O I R

Is the name of an art group, which rang a bell in my head and at that moment it brought back something, which has a lot more to do with a world of magic than with art. The name got stuck in my mind and also shaped the way I imagined the works will look before I have actually laid eyes on any of them. Rai Escalé /Spain/ and Miloš Kopták /Slovakia/ established the group in 2007, and since that time they have regularly visited each other’s studios, painted together and also exhibited together as Miroir Noir. It is a painterly couple, and most of all two like minds laboring on a common work. Still, I keep hearing the folk wisdom that says that if two people are given the same task, the result is never the same. And then there is another idea, which informs us that repeating the same result is impossible. All of this comes naturally as these two friends exist together in the framework of art, which is always evolving and changing. From a routinely art historical perspective, I need to say there are thousands of artistic collaborations: in music certainly, considerably less in film and theater, and in literature it is rare to find any. In fine arts of the past few decades, there were quite a number of these pairs producing common works. Warhol made canvases with Clemente, Haring with Basquiat, Dahn with Dokoupil, George with Gilbert and so on. I mention these examples for the sake of contrast: oeuvres of the individual members have always brought flavors of two disparate styles, which were expressions of more or less mature artistic individualities. In this case, on the contrary, not even an experienced art historian can decipher the correct authorship and pin down the place where one of them finished and the other took over. I don’t find it important as the advantages of this working style have become more clear to me, especially the proverbial spiritual synergy. Along with this harmony came the awareness of something common, fraternity, even historical context. Their work is therefore based on a collaborative reconstruction of the visual message from a flood of images lacking the necessary spark. From the complete oeuvre, four major cycles were chosen: “Portraits”, “Dictators”, “Mafiosi”, and “Holy Images”. The overview of works is enriched by 3-D objects and statues.

B E A U T Y

Is the core theme throughout their work, and deservedly so. The painter of today has to come back to this topic over and over again, to keep searching for its true face, for he is also part of the today’s world inundated by tabloids and their celebratory norm of beauty. If the result were only kitsch, we would have been smiling at the products of this dejected genre. Yet there is something more at stake, at least when we realize the cynical and profit-seeking manipulation of viewers through “public visuality.” It is therefore no coincidence that it was especially posters (even before they were plastered on the public walls and billboards) that became the most convenient working material for Miroir Noir. Posters only remained visible in fragments, because it was the expressive, gestural brushstrokes that provided works with their final identity. A poster beauty became “Salome”, another tabloid idol was transformed into “St. Vitus”, so Miroir Noir certainly borrowed from the reservoir of myths and history.
They were looking for genuineness, a certain artistic and painterly “living in truth” and in this sense works from the series “Portraits” went even further. These experimental and partly playful works were not depictions of any specific people, but used grotesquerie and exaggeration to examine and blur the limits between beauty and ugliness. These are faces of people plagued by illness of both body and mind: confrontation of artistic and authentic reality. These are faces of wretched men, in their own way incapable of social interaction and any hypocrisy whatsoever. An example of humanity standing on its last leg. Nihil novum sub sole. It is not entirely without meaning to remind ourselves that it was actually Spanish painting of the times long gone, which depicted this duality of beauty and ugliness in an ingenious way through cripples, outcasts and beggars. Two names, two distinctly different approaches to work come to mind: Murillo and Goya.
“Mafiosi” is another series based on a very similar principle as a highly contemporary and eminently actual phenomenon and it is composed of exclusively figural paintings. There was no other artistic identity to apply in this case, when the physical and mental (moral) repugnance reside in one entity. If you are searching for any individuality in these deformed figures and personifications of Evil, you are searching in vain. This is mafia as a body language, which brings us to an even more morbid topic.

D E A T H

Is the winner. It takes all and makes no distinction between old and young, rich and poor, wise men and fools. It always played a crucial role in the medieval dances of death and artists have always been drawn to it. It is a major topic for a contemporary artist considering we are living in the time, in which aside from the undisputed cult of Death, there is also a thriving culture of death leading to a cultivation of artificial death. It was Shakespeare who said that an artist and his work should mirror and chronicle their historical time. That would mean timelessness comes as an additional value. The series ”Dictators” is in this sense still very telling as we cannot really assert that the era of dictators and rulers with absolute power is a thing of the past.
The members of the Miroir Noir group personified this certainly crucial topic in Lenin, Stalin and Franco, that is in the dictators that were supposed to be exposed like idols – both to the venerating crowds and to the photographers that did what they could with their cameras. They tried to record and capture the final image of “immortality” and also to capture something naturally unobservable – the strange aura of charisma and power. We can also see a portion of that aura, or rather the hellish, sinister luminescence in the paintings. It is the color of blood, cruelty and mainly the mercilessness, which led to the endless piles of corpses. These are mechanically and automatically produced by every criminally ingenious dictatorial personality. The “Holy Images” are an entirely different topic. We know them as cheap prints, images of saints long passed away. They had their own, everyday purposes such as bookmarks in prayer books, at festive moments and in coffins where they accompanied the dead on their last journey. They were and I think they still are offered as merchandise in the church stands, mostly as reproductions of works by marginal artists. It makes sense to mention iconoclasm at this point, because the Church and its individual heretical sects have been fighting artworks for centuries and the sheer number of them destroyed by fanatics would fill several museums. There is of course also a certain perception of hierarchy and a steeply ascending trajectory from “holy images” to truly great paintings and statues. For painters of the Miroir Noir group, the “holy images” are something like a poster, they are more than anything else a product of a printing machine. They subject this adequate working material to a peculiar examination: they turn it to the left, to the right and upside down to find the spark for a new meaningful image. They then define the outlines with drawing and finish the new figure with color. New figural compositions originate this way, especially portraits and heads, which are to a certain extent even humorous. Certainly nothing that would oppose the premise that art and illusion are twins.

M I R O I R   N O I R

Byly mi naopak jasné přednosti tohoto způsobu práce, především tedy onen duchovní soulad a násobení sil, synergie.
Z celku společného díla byly vybrány čtyři celky: „Portréty“, „Diktátoři“, „Mafiáni“ a „Svaté obrázky“. Obrazový soubor doplní 3D objekty a plastiky.

K R Á S A

Hledala se opravdovost, jakýsi umělecký a malířský „život v pravdě“ a v tomto duchu obrazy z cyklu „Portréty“ mířily ještě dál. Nebyly to portréty konkretních osob, tyto práce – dílem pokusné, dílem hravé – groteskně a tedy s nadsázkou zkoumaly a znejisťovaly především onu hranici mezi krásou a ošklivostí. Jsou to tváře lidí postižených nemocemi těla i ducha : konfrontace reality skutečné a umělecké. Jsou to tváře chudáků, svým způsobem definitivní, neschopné společenských úsměvů a jakékoliv přetvářky. Příklad člověčenství, které mele z posledního. Nihil novum sub sole.
Hledáme-li v těch neforemných figurách a personifikacích Zla jakoukoliv individualitu, hledáme marně. Mafián toť řeč těla. Téma časové a první, přiblíží nás k tématu ještě morbidnějšímu.

S M R T

je vítěz. Bere všechno a bez rozdílu, staré i mladé, bohaté i chudé, mudrce i hlupáky. Jednak aby zaznamenali a na věčnost zachovali finální podobu „nesmrtelnosti“, jednak aby zachytili něco prostým okem nepostřehnutelné- tedy onu zvláštní auru geniality a moci. Potom kresbou zvýrazní obrysy a novou postavu doplní barvou. Vznikají tak další figurální kompozice a především hlavy-portréty. Dílka do jisté míry humorná.

Vidieť týmito očami je dar a zároveň dráma až tragédia, v ktorej vzniká obrovské napätie, sklamanie, hnus, a predsa istá radosť z plnosti života a zážitku katarzie.

Miroir Noir by Mgr. Zsófia Kiss-Szemán (ENG)

Milos Koptak & Rai Escale, Miroir Noir, and curator Zsófia Kiss-Szemán @ 2011 FruFru Gallery exhibition opening

M I R O I R    N O I R

The Milos Koptak and Rai Escale joint exhibition is the outcome of a an interactive cooperation by both artists sharing a perception relating to the crisis of our environment and our times, producing a very distinctive style close to a surrealistic method of working, a visually expressive and decadent imaginative form. The process of working appears to be particularly very important in many of aspects: on one hand, a process of communication between artists while creating, on the other hand, what is more important, the process of transformation of visual material.
This process has lasted longer than the viewer might imagine. Milos Koptak and Rai Escale work with images that represent faces or figures which have been transformed to deformed shapes; whereas when they worked individually, their approach to it was slightly different. Working together, they changed their techniques, but their primary input hasn’t changed – printed images extracted from advertisements have already been modified according to the aesthetic rules of the present day. This first moment in the process of working is notable – usually, a visual advertisement is unnaturally changed and exaggeratedly worked out in comparison to the basic reality in which existence is important in its own right. There is an image that exists and visually not only affects, but disturbs cultured psychical perception. The second moment, more important in this process, is based on simplifying this artificially evoked illusion and moreover, on adding to it ‘a new profile’, or new image which might be more typical, more real. Of course, it might appear less attractive and flattering at first sight.
The way they work is pure improvisation depending on actual mood of authors by stroke of rubber – mechanically or chemically – by using white spirit on the surface. An interpretative dialogue between two painters is predominant in the second phase of the creative process while using visual associations. A perception of a new picture with many original details has a new quality of its expression and meaning, which often occurs at a crossroads of ambiguous interpretative options between playful imagination and shocking response. Artefacts then sometimes combine seemingly opposite qualities: subtlety, cruelty and brutality in its expression, a revelation of the significant essence of a picture by disruption of visual forms and at the same time, obscurity owing to its extra layers of meaning.
Certainly, we perceive basic elements of decadence which have always been present in history as a reaction to, and defence against, the suffocating vagueness of an era at the edge of high culture and extreme subtlety where an adjoining phenomenon is often brutality, paradoxically.
Sensualism plays an essential part in the pictures, represented by elements associated with luxury and fame, such as twinkling jewellery or provoking richness of colours (claret and hues of THE colour of dried blood–caput mortuum’).
Koptak and Escale instinctively work with these very effective significant elements. They look for a new gesture as well as decadence in its different periods, they create a new de-formed aesthetics of these pictures. Their images – literally smelted and recast again into a vivid form often being concealed – have been presented as a black mirror. This recalled metamorphosis is neither symbolic nor mystic, it seems to be spontaneous in their process of cooperation. There the new creatures come into being, sometimes in a portrayal or figurative form, sometimes in standardised and another time in an unidentified version.
They are both fascinated by faces and heads which they work with as an effigy. An imaginary portrait is mostly a typical representation of specific attributes or personal qualities (as a fact only, not negative or positive characteristics in any psychological aspect). A head turns up in the least unexpected variation from every single visual base. The heads changing all the time are being transformed so long, until the form with an inner expression is desired. As a result, there is a portrait filled by the enormous irony and miserable condition of our world, The Slovak Boss… or a fictional portrait of a bishop presented with heavy sarcasm and visual wit, where non-transparent glasses of this honourable official are replaced by the outline of a model’s bra. The taunts and allusions are not always expressly legible in the new pictures in many details. Sometimes they are off-set into irony, another time into a mystery, eroticism or into a reversed, dark side of our world sporadically, but constantly coming out of our sinister background which we are trying unsuccessfully to push out of our consciousness – that is exactly what occurs in these paintings. To see it through is not only a gift, but drama and tragedy as well, where a certain joy of life and cathartic experience emerges despite the enormous tension, disappointment and ugliness.

Miroir Noir by Mery Cuesta (ESP)

Miroir Noir _The vicious marriage of luxury and decadence.

Miroir Noir is the project of Barcelona based Rai Escalé and the Slav Milos Koptak. His paintings made four hands emerge from a dark pot where Slav and Spanish traditions are removed (Goya and Saura dance with Kafka and Countess Bathory). Miroir Noir pass Baroque through a punk sieve, aesthetically, and more on what plays creation procedure. The resulting works of the unusual collaboration of two who met online and now acting ‘like a shadow for each other’ (…) give a thorough psychological and body painting. Psychological motives that underlie his paintings (photographs of the mentally ill, frightening religious prints), but mostly by implying that work of one in spite of the Other, where one spits out an outline, the other end and some of the two gives the final touch. An experimental proposal in a space that is also emphasizing by programming bizarre poetry and performance (…)

Miroir Noir Artist Notes

(ENG)
ARTIST’S NOTES
Legend says that when XVIIth century painters wanted to rest their eyes after so many hours mixing colors and glancing at the model they directed momentarily their look at a black mirror. The black mirror has become the crucible of our work together, a sort of filter in which we project our mood, nightmares and dreams.

Although it’s hard for us us to loose our individuality – we are powerful painters with powerful egos – Miroir Noir bends us and turns us into a third entity that transcends us. If we get away from what we are doing is just for technical inputs: a color or perspective correction , the requirement to the other for a more synthetic brushstroke , the discussion on a frame; mere nuances.
